Personal Statement – Finance – University of Durham

As a finance major, I firstly shifted my attention to SMEs (small and medium enterprises) related financial problem. I chose the University of Durham Internet Systems and E-Business MScdegree program, because it will enable the successful student to gain a critical appreciation and in-depth knowledge of the disciplines necessary to be a good business manager. It will also allow me to develop an analytical framework for the entrepreneurship process, which will improve my knowledge in independent, social enterprise, and corporate issues. An MSc will provide an opportunity for the successful applicant to acquire unique skills in programming, Internet technology, and software development.  Computing, programming and Finance are vital in today’s global competitive world where all smart devices use unique programs like Java and a coded operating system.

I conducted further research to demonstrate my thought and work out academically the methods for alleviating SMEs financing difficulties. After reading the article “Investigation in SMEs Financing,” I tried to combine qualitative and quantitative tools together to analyze the data from reports by the International Finance Corporation 2000. Consequently, I drew the conclusion that loans would be less available for smaller-scale and younger enterprise. My keen interest drove me to go further into this phenomenon. Assisted by Asymmetric Information Theory and Game Theory, my believe that credit expansion would mainly smooth the financing difficulties was verified in theory.

To better integrate theory with practice, I strove for a chance to hold an internship in the Bank of China in the summer of 2014. I also once helped a textile company, which had a mass production capacity, but lacked in purchase fund for raw material with “Auto Credit.” The regulation that credit can be reused under the credit line had eased the cash crisis. I practically learned how a bank can play a role in rescuing an enterprise close to unfunded.

My leadership and communication ability received a boost from the practical internships. My ambition for future career is to be a CFO in an SME because of the broad prospects of SMEs. Sound knowledge in credit business would be quite helpful. I managed to start my career with the credit department in the bank after graduation. The program taught at the University of Durham fits me well because this dynamic, research-intensive university could equip me for both academic and professional careers. The specialized curriculum could overcome my weakness on qualitative tools, application while Managerial Economics could acquaint me with microeconomics theory and an analytical approach to enterprise decision-making. The University of Durham interests me with its unique charm.

Besides, including over 180 student associations provides a platform for improving my leadership and sense of team spirit. I also learned violin from childhood, the open access for non-music students to practice also increases my desire to be part of this artistic atmosphere. The University of Durham Internet Systems and E-Business MScdegree program fits me well because it places an emphasis on how society can use or exploit innovation in the business and technological context to increase the chances of success of a new product or service.I feel that the university’s comprehensive program will provide me with the skills necessary to assess and generate business ideas. It will also provide me with the resilience to develop them by fostering the openness required to deal with uncertainty. In addition, the university does not only provide a stable academic atmosphere, but also creates a well-rounded individual through extra-curricular activities like dancing and art. I am eager to be part of the university community, and your acceptance would greatly honor me.
